For most seniors, the ideal time to schedule portraits is during the summer before senior year or early in the fall.

Booking early gives us plenty of time to:

• Choose locations that fit your senior’s personality and style
• Plan outfits and create a variety of looks
• Take advantage of beautiful seasonal light
• Leave room for weather rescheduling
• Make sure images are ready before school yearbook deadlines

My senior calendar is designed with flexibility in mind. I typically offer three senior portrait session dates per week, while keeping the remaining days open for rain rescheduling. This allows us to have backup options if the weather doesn’t cooperate and helps ensure your senior gets the beautiful portraits they deserve without the stress of a tight timeline.

When Is the Best Time of Year for Senior Pictures?

Summer is a popular choice for many seniors because schedules are often more flexible before the busy school year begins. Summer sessions also offer beautiful golden light, but because the sun sets later, these sessions typically begin later in the evening — often around 7:00 PM depending on the location and time of year. This later start time allows us to take advantage of the softer, warmer light near sunset while avoiding the harsh midday sun. Summer is a great option if your senior has a busy fall schedule with sports or activities, wants plenty of time before yearbook deadlines, prefers warmer weather and summer locations and wants a more relaxed start to senior year.

Fall Senior Sessions are one of the most requested times for senior portraits, and it’s easy to see why! The colorful foliage, comfortable temperatures, and beautiful New England scenery create a stunning backdrop. Because the sun sets much earlier in the fall, sessions typically begin earlier in the afternoon — often around 4:00 or 5:00 PM depending on the location and date.

Those earlier start times allow us to capture the gorgeous golden light before sunset while making the most of the shorter days. If your senior has their heart set on fall colors, I recommend reaching out early. Fall dates are some of the first to fill because many families are hoping for peak foliage and ideal weather.

Why Don’t Photographers Schedule Senior Photos in the Middle of the Day?

The answer comes down to light. The middle of the day is when the sun is at its highest and brightest, creating harsh, direct light that can be difficult to photograph in. This type of lighting can create strong shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin, cause people to squint, and make skin tones appear less flattering. As photographers, we carefully plan sessions around the best natural light because it makes a huge difference in the final images. The hours around sunrise and sunset — often called golden hour — provide softer, warmer light that enhances your senior’s features and creates a more natural, flattering look.

While a midday session might seem like the easiest option from a scheduling standpoint, waiting for the best light allows your senior to look and feel their best while creating the beautiful, professional portraits you’re hoping for. The timing of your session is intentional — it’s all about creating the best possible experience and the most beautiful images for your senior.

What If My Senior’s Yearbook Deadline Is Coming Up?

Don’t panic! I photograph seniors throughout the year, and depending on your school’s deadline, there may still be options available. The most important thing is knowing your school’s requirements and allowing enough time for your senior portrait session, editing and gallery delivery, selecting your yearbook image (if required) and meeting any print or submission deadlines. Every school is different, so I always recommend checking your senior’s yearbook guidelines and reaching out if you have questions about timing.
